> Sheldon's Knock

When Sheldon returns home from college in the middle of the day, he walks in on George and Mary being intimate.
Because Mary was pretending to be a German woman named Helga, wearing a blonde wig and lederhosen, Sheldon thought his father was cheating with another woman, as established on The Big Bang Theory.
Adult Sheldon explained "I never talked to my father about what I saw that day, but, from then on, I added extra knocks so people could get their pants on."

Quotes

Quote from Mary

Sheldon: Mark my words, string theory is going to be the next big thing.
Mary: What does it do?
Sheldon: It explains the fundamental forces of the universe. How everything works, where everything came from.
Mary: I know where it all came from. [points to the heavens]
Sheldon: Mother, we're in the sky. Why are you pointing up?

Quote from Dale

Mary: So, how's it going, you two living together?
Meemaw: She's leaving out, "in sin."
Mary: I didn't say it.
Dale: Well, don't we get a pass for being old?
Mary: I didn't say anything.
Meemaw: With his back being all askew, there's not much sinning going on.
Dale: Well, not none. We find ways to be creative.
Mary: I don't want to know. [scoffs]

Quote from Mary

[After a bout of turbulence, Mary clasps her hands together in prayer]
Sheldon: Oh, there's no reason to do that. It's just irregular motion of air around the plane caused by temperature changes. [more turbulence] Oh, that was a big one. And given our altitude, perfectly predictable. [cabin alert chimes]
Flight Attendant: [v.o.] The pilot has turned on the seatbelt sign. Please return to your seat.
Sheldon: A reasonable precaution. [checks seatbelt] Snug as a bug. [more turbulence]
Mary: Would you like me to include you in my prayers?
Sheldon: No, thanks, I don't need to seek help from an invisible man.
Mary: You're right, you've got your invisible strings.

Quote from Mary

Sheldon: [baby crying] Babies. Why'd it have to be babies?
Mary: Oh, relax. He'll cry himself out. You won't even know he's there.
[four hours later:]
Sheldon: [baby crying] [sighs] Please tell that mother to quiet her baby.
Mary: Sometimes moms can't make their kids be quiet no matter how much they try.

Quote from Missy

Mary: Oh. Look, a chore chart. I made one of those. Y'all ignored it.
Missy: They don't ignore it if you stop feeding them.
Georgie: That was a long weekend.
Missy: Georgie, bathroom.
Georgie: Thank you.
Missy: Crowded house, one bathroom. We needed a schedule.

Episode Recap

On the first leg of their journey home, Sheldon and Mary are on a flight from Frankfurt to London. When Mary asks Sheldon if he’s excited to be going home, he points to his head and says that he's always home. Still, Sheldon is excited to share everything he’s learned with his colleagues. “Scientifically speaking, they're savages covered in their own filth, and I'll be bringing them the light.”, Sheldon says. Mary thinks there’s probably a nicer way to say that. Sheldon agrees but says the summer in Germany has taught him that brutal honesty is its own kind of love. Sheldon is sure string theory is the next big thing, believing it explains where everything comes from. Mary, pointing to the heavens, already knows where everything originates. After they hit a bout of turbulence, Mary starts to pray. Sheldon tries to remain calm, rationalizing the turbulence as a normal occurrence. As the turbulence grows, Mary continues praying and asks Sheldon if he would like her to include him in her prayer. Sheldon insists he doesn’t need help from an invisible man. “You're right, you've got your invisible strings.”, Mary retorts.

After a layover in London, their next pilot apologizes for a delay and hopes to be wheels up in 20 minutes. Sheldon tells his mother that’s what the pilot said 20 minutes ago. Mary isn’t concerned, as there’s nothing they can do about it, but Sheldon is worried they’ll miss their connecting flight to Houston. Mary says it’s out of their hands. She’d tell him whose hands it’s in, but he doesn’t like that. When a baby starts crying, Sheldon exclaims “Babies. Why’d it have to be babies?” Mary assures him the baby will cry himself out eventually. Four hours later, Sheldon begs Mary to ask the baby’s mother to quiet him down. Mary admits sometimes mothers can’t make their children be quiet, no matter how hard they try. Seven hours later, Sheldon is holding his nose and puffing his cheeks out, trying to get his ears to pop. Mary offers him a stick of gum. “Is it cinnamon?”, Sheldon asks. When she says it is, Sheldon complains “I have enough problems.” At that moment, the baby starts crying again. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

When Sheldon and Mary finally arrive in Houston, Texas, the rest of the Coopers - George, Missy and Georgie - along with Mandy and CeeCee, are waiting in the arrivals lounge. As Sheldon and Mary emerge, George and Missy hold up a sign that reads, “Welcome Home Mom & Sheldon”. George gives Mary a hug and welcomes her home. When CeeCee starts to cry, Sheldon remarks, “Look mother, more babies.”

Back home, Sheldon is the first to walk through the door. After he remarks that he’s so happy to sleep in his own bed again, George is surprised Mary didn’t tell him on the plane. “Tell me what?” Sheldon wonders. Mary thought George would tell him in the car, but George points out Sheldon was grumpy in the car. “How do you think he was on the plane?”, Mary asks her husband. After Sheldon’s parents don’t come out and say it, Mandy snaps and takes it upon herself to tell him, “Me and Georgie and the baby have been staying in your room.” A surprisingly reasonable Sheldon says that makes sense: he was out of town, there was a tornado, they needed a place to sleep. “So you’re okay with it?”, Georgie asks. “Oh, no, I'm home now. Get out.”, Sheldon says. After Mandy refuses to move, Sheldon argues it’s his room. George says it’s his house. “Our house”, Mary corrects him. Sheldon suggests they sleep in the garage, but George isn’t having his grandbaby sleep in a garage. “Our grandbaby”, Mary corrects him again. Mandy argues it’s not too bad out there, while Georgie adds there’s a sink to pee in. George says it’s been a long day, why doesn’t Sheldon sleep on the couch tonight and they’ll figure it out tomorrow. “Fine”, Sheldon relents, only to realize his ears have finally popped.

As Mary and George climb into bed, Mary says “I missed you.” When George replies that he missed her too, Mary jokes she was talking to the bed. George says it’s been a while since they were apart for so long, adding that it’s a long time for a man to go without his wife. Mary gets his drift and says she wants to, but she just spent 18 hours with “you know who” and needs to sleep. George says he understands. He points out it wouldn’t take long… but he understands. “I promise, if you wait, it'll be worth it.”, Mary tells him, “I might even have a little surprise for you.” George likes the sound of that and says he can wait. As he turns over, he adds, “But if you can't wait, just give me a poke in the ribs. I'll be ready right quick.”

In the middle of the night, Sheldon is wide awake, struggling to get comfortable on the couch while CeeCee cries in another room. Eventually, he goes and knocks on his bedroom door. “What?”, Mandy asks as she opens the door. “Baby’s crying.”, Sheldon says. “You really are a genius.”, Mandy retorts before closing the door. After Sheldon goes out to the garage with his blanket, he takes one look at the living space and says, “Nope.”

At Dale’s house, Meemaw reaches for the ringing bedside phone. “Meemaw, it's me”, Sheldon says. She asks if everything’s okay, and Sheldon responds, “No, everything's terrible. The baby stole my room and won't stop crying and now they're making me sleep in the garage.” Meemaw wonders what he wants her to do about it. “Pick me up and I can stay with you”, he tells his grandmother. Meemaw points out that it’s Dale’s house, so she’d need to ask him. After waking up, Dale says, “Ask me what?” Meemaw covers the phone and explains, “It's Shelly. He wants to spend the night.”. A sleepy but agreeable Dale says, “Oh, yeah, it'd be nice to see the little guy.” Meemaw returns to the phone and tells Sheldon, “Dale says no. See you in the morning.”

When Mary wakes up, she realizes she’s slept in. After heading to the kitchen, she’s surprised to find breakfast already set on the table and even more taken aback to see Georgie doing the dishes. Missy explains she made breakfast and can heat it up for her mother, while Georgie points to the chore chart to explain why he’s washing up. Mary reminds them she once put up a chore chart once, but they ignored it. Missy retorts that they don’t ignore it when you stop feeding them. When Missy sends Georgie to the bathroom, she explains to her mother that with a crowded house and one bathroom, they needed a schedule. Mary wonders if there’s anything she can do to help, but Missy insists there’s not and tells her to enjoy her breakfast. As Mary sits down at the kitchen table, she suggests they spend the day together. Missy would like to, but she’s already promised Taylor she would go shopping for back-to-school clothes. When Mary asks when she’ll meet Taylor, Missy insists he’s just a friend, asking her not to make it weird. Mary is surprised when Sheldon walks in through the kitchen door in his pajamas. He explains he spent the night in the garage. Mary asks if slept okay. “Not a wink”, Sheldon says, “but thank you for asking”.

As Sheldon reaches the bathroom and tries to turn the doorknob, he groans as he realizes it’s locked. He knocks on the door. “What?”, Georgie asks from inside. Sheldon explains he needs to use the bathroom. “Well, too bad, it's my turn. Check the schedule.”, Georgie tells him. Sheldon looks around and doesn’t see a schedule. Georgie tells him to look at the fridge. Sheldon hurries to the fridge and sees that Georgie’s right, it is his turn. “This is going to be close”, Sheldon admits.

When Mary joins Meemaw and Dale at his house, she asks about the two of them living together. Meemaw assumes Mary means “living together in sin”, but Mary insists she didn’t say anything like that. Meemaw says with Dale’s back being all askew, there’s not much “sinning” going on. Dale, however, insists it’s not none, as they find ways to get creative. Mary doesn’t want to hear anymore. Mary then asks what she’s going to do with her house. Meemaw insists she will rebuild but it will take time. Dale says until then, she has a home… with a man who gives her plenty of loving. Meemaw asks Mary how it feels to be home, saying it must be good. “I guess”, Mary remarks. Meemaw wonders what’s wrong. “Well, they have everything running pretty smooth without me, so... feeling a little displaced.”, Mary admits. Meemaw bristles at the word “displaced”, considering what happened to her home of 47 years. She shows Mary a picture of the destruction wrought upon her house. Dale adds that he took that picture, which even made the local paper. He heads off to find a copy to show Mary.

At football practice, George scolds the kids, telling them it looks like they haven’t practiced all summer. When Mary arrives, George describes it as a nice surprise. “Well, I just thought I'd come hang out, watch you turn this ragtag bunch of kids into state champs”, Mary replies. Coach Wilkins comments that George didn’t tell him Germany made her funny, but George insists they have a real shot this year. Mary then mentions she brought some snacks for the players, prompting George to wonder if she brought anything for the coach. “Just some sugar”, she teases. As George and Mary kiss, Coach Wilkins groans, “Okay, now I'm gonna puke.”

As Sheldon walks down the hallway of his college dorm building, Adult Sheldon explains he returned home from Germany to a family which no longer cherished him. But he knew somewhere he was still valued, where he was still the center of attention, and, most importantly, where he had his own bathroom. When Sheldon enters his dorm room, he immediately notices somebody else’s belongings and mess. Spotting somebody working on the computer, Sheldon asks what he’s doing in his room. Evan doesn’t hear as he’s wearing headphones, so Sheldon taps on his shoulder. Evan asks what Sheldon’s doing there. Sheldon says that’s what he asked and he asked first. Evan insists it’s his room, but Sheldon points out his key card opened the door. Evan doesn’t care, tells him to go away. Sheldon starts to turn, but then declares he’s not going anywhere. Evan is back focusing on the computer so doesn’t hear. Sheldon taps him again and reiterates that he’s not going anywhere. “Okay”, Evan sighs. “Alrighty then”, Sheldon says to himself. As Evan gets back to work, Sheldon taps his shoulder a third time to ask what he’s working on. “I'm writing a Pascal compiler for an alpha processor.” For once Sheldon is stumped, so Evan passes him a computer science book. When Sheldon sits down on his bed to read, Evan asks Sheldon’s name, but he’s too busy reading to answer now.

Later, in the dorm room, Sheldon taps Evan’s shoulder again. After Evan takes off his headphones, Sheldon hands back the book and introduces himself, saying he’s finished reading it. Evan doesn’t believe him, so tests him with a technical question. When Sheldon answers it correctly, Evan suggests he should major in computer science. Sheldon replies that he’ll stick to “real science”. Evan counters that computing is the future and will revolutionize everything. “Maybe commerce, communications, media and banking, but nothing important.”, Sheldon retorts. Evan wonders what’s so important about what Sheldon’s studying. “String theory, where do I begin? It explains everything. It unifies the fundamental forces in an elegant way.”, Sheldon argues. “Yeah, but what does it do?”, Evan presses. “Hmm…”, Sheldon considers, “Get out.”

At football practice, Mary serves up the food she brought and assures the team there’s no rush as there’s enough to go around. When George calls them back for blocking drills, Mary asks if he can’t let them catch their breath. Coach Wilkins, however, insists the players hit the sleds. Mary loves the sleds. Later, the football players plush the sleds across the field, with Mary cheering in excitement as she stands on the front of a sled. While Mary has the time of her life and Wayne munches on the food, George is annoyed at the interruption to his practice.

Back in Sheldon’s dorm room, he emerges from the bathroom with a toilet brush and says, “Well, that was Chernobyl-adjacent.”. Evan apologizes, explaining he’s still getting used to Tex-Mex. Sheldon points out you don’t have to be from Texas to flush. When Evan asks if he grew up around here, Sheldon replies, “Medford. It's not as nice as it sounds.” “Oh.”, Evan says, waiting for a follow up question that never comes. “Yeah, now you ask where I'm from”, Evan comments. Sheldon explains he doesn’t do that. “Cool”, Evan says before moving on to ask about the “girl situation”. “I don't do that either”, Sheldon states replies. “You into guys?”, Evan asks Sheldon replies that he’s into science. Everything else is a distraction. “So… no video games?”, Evan asks as he holds up a copy of Star Fire, explaining it’s not even out yet - he’s a beta tester. “Oh, my”, an impressed Sheldon mutters. “I didn't know his name or where he was from, but he was my new best friend.”, Adult Sheldon adds.

After the whistle blows to end practice, George finds Mary packing up. “Well… this was a fun, special, one-time thing, wasn't it?”, he tells her. Mary replies that she was hoping to keep doing it - to become like the “team mom”. She adds that the boys really enjoyed having her there. George asks her to sit with him. He says it’s been so good having her back. Mary interrupts to say when she was back in Heidelberg she thought they should do more- George tells her to hold that thought. “Thing is, these practices aren't meant to be enjoyed. They're meant to be endured, survived. Hated, actually.”, he says. Mary thinks that sounds terrible, but George argues it’s a good thing because the team takes this hate and unleashes it on the other team. Mary thinks he’s turning them into monsters. “There you go,” George says, “and monsters don't have team moms. Let me help you get this crap in the car.”

Back in the dorm, Sheldon struggles to defeat a guard on the game, so Evan sits down and gets Sheldon a better gun. When Sheldon asks how he did it, Evan casually explains he just used a cheat code. Sheldon is offended, insisting he doesn’t cheat. Evan tries to clarify that the game developers built this feature in, but Sheldon is more concerned with whether he condones cheating. Evan replies yeah, “when it’s with a wink”. Sheldon doesn’t like winking either - at the end of the day, it leaves you with an uneven number of winks. Evan thinks that sounds insane. “Oh, I'm insane?”, Sheldon shoots back. “You're the cheating winker. Are you from California?”, he asks. “Oh, now you want to know where I'm from.”, Evan remarks. Sheldon says he knows enough, so he grabs his stuff to leave. Before Sheldon storms off, Evan thanks him for tidying the dorm room. Sheldon tells him the toilet is still disinfecting and advises him not to use it for 20-30 minutes. As Sheldon walks down the hallway, he stops halfway. Then, Evan hears a knock on his door and opens it to find Sheldon, who says he’ll keep cleaning the apartment if Evan keeps the gameplay clean. Adult Sheldon reflects, “We had had our first fight, but, at the end of the day, it really brought what's-his-name and I closer together.”

In the kitchen, Mary pours herself a beer, takes a sip and comments, “I miss Germany.” Then, Missy storms in. Mary greets her, but a visibly upset Missy heads straight to her room. When Mary asks if everything’s fine, Missy insists it’s okay. Mary asks if she wants to watch a movie. Missy gives her a curt no, then slams her bedroom door behind her. Mary approaches the door to talk to her. At first, Missy tells Mary to go away. Mary says she’s there if she wants to talk. As Mary starts to walk away, Missy opens her bedroom door and admits Taylor broke up with her. Mary hugs Missy, who asks her not to tell her dad since he didn’t know they were dating. Mary assures her it’s none of his business. Missy tells her mom she’s really glad she’s back. “Me, too”, Mary replies. She asks Missy if she wants to talk about it and, when Missy agrees, they both head into her room. As Mary closes the door behind them, she feels a spark of purpose, finally finding her place again at home, especially when it seemed like everyone had been coping fine without her.

It’s the next morning in the college dorm room. Adult Sheldon explains it took 14 hours, 211 lives... but he emerged victorious. Sheldon taps Evan’s shoulder to wake him up from his sleep. “Hey, cheater guy, I won. Fair and square.”, Sheldon tells him. Evan wonders what time it is. Sheldon explains it’s 7:42 am, and he thinks they should celebrate. “Do you have any Yoo-hoo?”, he asks. When Evan says no, Sheldon tells him to wait there as he goes to get some. “I wish I could tell you we toasted my victory, but I fell asleep in the hallway.”, Adult Sheldon adds.

In the Cooper house, as Georgie, Mandy and George sit at the table eating while Mary and Missy prepare their breakfasts. When Mandy asks where Sheldon is, Missy says he’s probably out in the garage. George wonders if someone should go tell him breakfast is ready. “Oh no, this is lovely”, Mary says, surprising everyone. Georgie, Mandy, Missy and George all glance at her, clearly taken aback that she'd say anything negative about Sheldon. Mary quickl covers, “Uh, let him sleep, jet lag and all.”. Georgie guesses the whole summer with him was enough. “If you want me to get him, I'll go get him.”, Mary offers. They all speak over each other to say no.

In the bedroom, Mary asks George if he’s ready for his surprise. When he uncovers his eyes, he sees she’s wearing lederhosen and a blonde wig. In a German accent, Mary purrs, “Hello, you handsome American boy toy. I am Helga. Do you like what you see?” “Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.”, George responds, matching her accent. They both laugh. Meanwhile, outside, Sheldon arrives at the front door, unlocks it and steps inside. “Hello?”, he calls to no answer. As Sheldon walks down the hallway, Mary asks George, “Are you sure your wife won't come home?” George laughs and replies, “I'm sure.” Sheldon knocks on his parents' bedroom door and then opens it. When the door swings open, he hears George exclaim, “Oh, Helga.” Sheldon’s eyes widen in shock. Without a word, he quickly turns around and shuts the door. As Sheldon hurries out of the house, Adult Sheldon narrates, “I never talked to my father about what I saw that day, but, from then on, I added extra knocks so people could get their pants on.”
